Being prepared while you are on the trail means more than just what you have in your backpack. It also means being ready for any and all wildlife encounters. Education is key so you know what to do when you see these majestic animals.
First things first, when you arrive at a park check in with a Ranger for the latest cervidae activity and safety information.
What Are Cervidae:
Deer, Elk, Moose, and Caribou
Safety Protocol:
– stay at least 25 yards away
– if approached slowly back away and allow the animal to pass
– if charged upon, find shelter in a vehicle or behind a tall, sturdy barrier
– bulls will defend their territory
– cows are especially fierce and protective around their calves
– charging is expected if they feel threatened
– they can reach speeds of up to 35 mph
– if ears are laid back or hair raised on hump, neck, or hips they feel threatened
Reminder!
KNOW WHEN THE RUT IS HAPPENING
Seeing a cervidae in the wild can be a magical experience. Remember we are in their home, we are the intruder, we need to give them the respect they deserve.
