Being prepared while you are on the trail means more than just what you have in your backpack. It also means being ready for any and all wildlife encounters. Education is key so you know what to do when you see these majestic animals.
First things first, when you arrive at a park check in with a Ranger for the latest bison activity and safety information.
Important Note:
Bison are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans.
Safety Protocol:
– stay at least 25 yards away
– turn around and avoid interacting
– approaching bison threatens them
– warning signs a charge is imminent: bluffing, head bobbing, pawing, bellowing, or snorting
– do NOT stand your ground
– immediately walk or run away
– spray bear spray as you are moving away if the animal follows you
Reminder!
DO NOT PET THE FLUFFY COWS!
Did You Know:
Bison have injured more people than any other animal.
Seeing a bison in the wild can be a magical experience. But you need to respect the largest land mammal in North America. Remember we are in their home, we are the intruder, we need to give them the respect they deserve.
