Being prepared while you are on the trail means more than just what you have in your backpack. It also means being ready for any and all wildlife encounters. Education is key so you know what to do when you see these majestic animals.
First things first, when you arrive at a park check in with a Ranger for the latest bear activity and safety information.
So, you are out on the trail, and you have encountered a bear and things are about to get dicey… do you have your bear spray? Remember knowing what to do could save your life.
When you are in bear country you should ALWAYS be carrying bear spray (if laws allow for it).

*Read the instructions that comes with the bear spray you know how to use your specific can.
Only use bear spray if the bear is charging at you. You should never spray a bear just because it is in the area. Remember this is for self-defense, not just because. Respect goes both ways!
Always stay 300 feet away from all bears.
Quick trick to know if you are far enough away. Give yourself a thumbs up and if you can cover the bear with you thumb you are good. If the bear can be seen outside your thumb give the bear more space!
