Who Has The Right Away? Trail Edition

So you are out on the trail and you come across others on the trail. Rude right. I am kidding we love seeing each other on the trail.

But who has the right away and what actions should you take to be the best steward of the trail.

Hiker/Runner
– Those going uphill have the right away to those going down.
– When passing one another announce yourself before you pass.
– Solo hikers are to yield to a group of hikers.
– Groups stay single-file, never more than two wide if space allows.
– Technically bikers are to yield to hikers/runners but it is normally easier for us to move for them.
– Always yield to stock animals.

Biker:
– Technically, supposed to yield to hikers/runners. However, it’s normally easier for the hiker or runner to move off trail to let them pass, but it is not required. Be a good biker and call out to let others know you are coming.
– You must yield to stock animals on the trail. You should get off your bike and let them pass.

Mule/Horse:
– Mules/Horses always win and everyone MUST give them the right away.
– Give them as much berth as you can.
– Don’t make any fast/abrupt movements and stay calm.
– If on a narrow trail be on the downhill side.

Wild Animals:
– If you come upon a wild animal while on the trail give it the respect it deserves.
– Give it space.
– Don’t make sudden movements.
– Stay calm.
– Turn around or find a different route.

Trail etiquette is everyone’s responsibility.

Remember to respect each other on the trail.

Drop a 💚 if you commit to following the ways of the trails when you come upon your fellow humans and animals.
