Campfire Safety

Do y’all remember what Smokey Bear taught us all when we where kids? “Only you can prevent wildfires!” Ok it use to be forest fires but in 2001 it was amended to support all unplanned fires not just in forests. Which is a way to tell our age. But to the important information.

Did you know that nearly nine of of ten wildfires nationwide are caused by humans and could have been prevented!

Which means we can all do our part by following this simple checklist that Smokey Bear put together for Campfire Safety:

DO:
1. Make sure your campfires is a safe distance from your tent or anything that can burn.
2. Use rocks to create fire ring in the center of a large cleared area.
3. Keep young children and pets away from fire
4. Use the Drown-Stir-Drown-Feel method to put out a campfire safely.

DON’T:
1. Start a fire when it’s windy.
2. Leave fire unattended.
3. Leave your fire without first putting it completely out.
4. Use flammable liquids to start campfire.
5. Extinguish a campfire with just dirt or sand – add H2O.
6. Bury warm/hot coals or ashes in campfire pit.
7. Burn glass, cans, plastics, or garbage in your campfire.
8. Play or goof around near a campfire.

Let all do our part to keep unplanned fires away from our natural areas.
