You want to explore the great outdoors but have no one to escape with you. No problem. It’s time to hit the trails solo. It’s freeing and powerful to embrace your strength of independence. Don’t wait another minute to start on the trails.
Ok ok I know what you are saying… “there is so much that could go wrong and I’m by myself.” Key word there sis is “could.” A lot could happen but you’ll never know if you don’t go and then you are letting fear win. And you are more of a badass than that.
So how do I head out with such confidence? It’s simple… prepare, plan, and protect. Let me share my tips below for each.
PREPARE
Do your homework on the trail and area before you go.
– Terrain
– Weather
– Map of Trails (printed on paper)
– Distance
– Route you will take
– Time it should take you
– What you need to wear
– What you need to pack
– How much water to bring
– Do you need snacks or food
– Charge your Garmin
PLAN
Have check-in buddies!
– Share planned route
– Take full body photo of what you are wearing and any accessories you are carrying with you
– Share how long you should be gone
– Share any concerns you might have
– Share photo of vehicle/camper with plates (if they don’t have it or know it)
– Send text right as you start your adventure
– Send text once you are back safe in vehicle/camper
– Share if you will be out of service so they don’t freak out when you don’t respond
PROTECT
Carry protection from humans, animals, and the elements.
– Go Guarded Ring
– Go Guarded Hand-Held Knife with Pepper Spray
– Go Guarded Personal Alarm
– RoadID for identification
– Accident detection set up on your Garmin
– Know what to do if you come upon wild animals
– Bear Spray (if in bear country)
– First Aid Kit
– Rain Poncho
– Emergency Thermal Blanket
